Aero-acoustic analysis techniques may include scaling of wind tunnel or flight test data; application of test-based empirical models; or selective application of unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation codes. Typical applications include space launch vehicles, missiles, aircraft and other vehicles and consumer electronic systems.

The Engineer will be required to write proposals, technical reports and technical papers, as well as provide results to clients that satisfy quality, cost, timing and other project specifications. The Engineer will be required to give oral presentations to clients and at technical conferences. The successful candidate will have demonstrated competence in some or all of the following fields:

  • Wind tunnel testing for unsteady surface pressure loads from flow fields
  • Wind tunnel testing of radiated sound from flow fields
  • Dimensional analysis and scaling of aero-acoustic loads & noise sources
  • Application of Lighthill’s acoustic analogy to prediction of sound radiation from turbulence
  • CFD modeling of compressible flow fields to estimate unsteady pressures
  • Application of Ffowcs-Williams-Hawking equations or equivalent, for prediction of sound sources in unsteady flow fields
  • Acoustic test techniques for sound source identification/imaging, including near field acoustic holography.
  • Boundary Element of equivalent methods for modeling acoustic radiation from CFD-derived noise sources
  • Vibro-acoustics analysis for prediction of vibration response of structures to unsteady aero-acoustic loads, including Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) and Finite Element analysis.
  • Modeling and test methods for aero-elasticity or flutter
  • Modeling thermal transport mechanisms in fluid flow
  • CFD software development experience
  • Computational fluid-structure interaction, including CFD/CSD code coupling
  • Hypersonics and/or chemically reacting flows
