Although Femap has a built-in function to generate surfaces from a mesh, doing so throughout a large model can be very tedious. This API automates the selection of element groups. The new geometry is quite accurate and can easily be remeshed for a new FEM.

Tip: Create the element groups using the autogenerate feature with angle breaks and non-manifold edges on.
