Mary Baker Industry Achievement Award Presented to Dr. Daniel J. Segalman at IDETC-CIE

 

HOUSTON, Texas, September 9, 2026 – ATA Engineering congratulates Dr. Daniel J. Segalman, recipient of the 2026 Mary Baker Industry Achievement Award. This award was established by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Technical Committee on Vibration and Sound (TCVS) to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Mary Baker. In naming the award for Mary, whose incredible trailblazing career involved founding ATA Engineering over two decades ago, ASME/TCVS seeks to recognize engineering professionals in industry who exemplify her spirit of innovation, originality, and meaningful impact in their work. This award was presented to Dr. Segalman last month at the International Design Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (IDETC-CIE).

About Dr. Segalman

Dr. Segalman, a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University and an ASME Fellow, is internationally recognized for his work in structural dynamics, vibration, uncertainty quantification, model validation, and nonlinear mechanics. Before joining Michigan State University, he spent nearly three decades at Sandia National Laboratories, where he led major research programs, advanced analytical methods and predictive engineering approaches for complex systems, and served as a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff. He is perhaps best known for his pioneering work on the mechanics of structures with bolted interfaces, which has informed countless subsequent studies. He also developed a four-parameter Iwan element for modeling energy dissipation in systems with jointed interfaces, an approach that remains widely used in structural simulations.

Dr. Segalman was selected for this award not only for his technical expertise and influence within the academic and research communities, but also for his positive influence and mentorship of those pursuing careers in this field—qualities that further exemplify the legacy of Dr. Mary Baker. Throughout Dr. Segalman’s career, he has demonstrated a sustained commitment to technical excellence through his research, leadership, publications, and patents across dynamics, smart materials, contact mechanics, and computational engineering, helping to advance the field and shape the work of others. His accomplishments have earned numerous honors, including the ASME N.O. Myklestad Award and the ASME Robert E. Abbott Award. This latest recognition reflects the technical excellence, leadership, and mentorship that have defined Dr. Segalman’s career and align closely with the legacy of Dr. Mary Baker.
